Lunch with the League: Dr. Mark Fox on the COVID-19 pandemic

SOUTH BEND - In February, the League of Women Voters of the South Bend Area will welcome Dr. Mark Fox to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will take place virtually on February 12 2021, at 12:00 p.m.

Dr. Fox will give an update on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic in St. Joseph County, with attention to disease prevalence, data on testing, and vaccination efforts. The impact of emerging strains of SARS-CoV-2 and mitigation efforts will also be discussed.

PRESENTER:
Mark D. Fox, M.D., Ph.D., MPH, is Associate Dean and Regional Campus Director of the IU School of Medicine-South Bend, where he is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Dr. Fox also serves as the Deputy Health Officer for the St. Joseph County Department of Health, where his focus is on community health improvement initiatives. He also is responsible for leading the COVID-19 response for the county.

Dr. Fox received his medical degree, as well as a doctorate in religion, ethics and society, at Vanderbilt University. He completed residency training in the combined medicine/pediatrics residency program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry where he also completed his fellowship in Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Preventive Cardiology and earned a master of public health degree.

Dr. Fox is a distinguished adjunct professor of theology at Notre Dame, and an adjunct professor for the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at IUPUI, in the Center for Health Policy.

Dr. Fox has a long-standing interest in health care for vulnerable populations. While in Tulsa, he established the Heart Improvement Project, a comprehensive cardiovascular risk reduction program serving uninsured patients with increased cardiovascular risk. In addition, he developed the Street Outreach Clinic, in conjunction with Youth Services of Tulsa, serving sheltered and homeless youth.

He previously served as Associate Dean for Community Health and Research Development at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine in Tulsa, where he held the Julian Rothbaum Chair in Community Health Research. While in Tulsa, he also served as medical director of the OU Wayman Tisdale Specialty Health Clinic, and associate director of the Oklahoma Bioethics Center.
