Our January speaker will be Dr. Darryl Heller, Director of the IU South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center and Assistant Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at IUSB.
Dr. Heller will speak about Reparations and Restorative Justice: A Path Towards Racial Healing. The general point of Dr. Heller’s talk is that reparations, as part of the process for healing racial injustice, is most meaningful when regarded within a restorative justice framework.
Speaker bio: Dr. Heller received his BA in Philosophy from the College of Charleston, MA in American Studies from Columbia University, and his PhD in History from the University of Chicago. He currently teaches and facilitates discussions on the topics of racism and white supremacy, the history of racial construction, and the intersection of race and gender. Dr. Heller is the president of the South Bend Reparations Working Group and is a board member of the Community Forum for Economic Justice and Imani Unidad. He also serves on the IU South Bend Dwyer School of Health Sciences Diversity Council, the IU South Bend Police Advisory Board, and is a member of the City of South Bend Board of Public Safety.
