St. Joseph County Vote Centers Focus of Two Events

SOUTH BEND -- Two events are planned to provide information about and promote discussion of a proposal to implement vote centers in St. Joseph County.

At noon Friday, county commissioner Andy Kostielney will speak and answer questions at the local League of Woman Voters' monthly "Lunch with the League" event at the South Bend Chocolate Café, 122 S. Michigan St.

The event is free and open to the public. Those wishing to order lunch from the menu should arrive at 11:30 a.m.

On Tuesday, a public forum will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. inside Colfax Auditorium of St. Joseph County Public Library, 304 S. Main St. The forum will provide information about how other Indiana counties have implemented vote centers, what is proposed for St. Joseph County, and some of the advantages and disadvantages of vote centers.

Speakers will include: Betty Doversberger, a member of the board of directors of the League of Women Voters of Indiana and former chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College in Lafayette; county clerk Terri Rethlake; and Robert Smith, chair of both the Michiana Voting Coalition and the board of directors of the Martin Luther King Jr. Senior Men's Club.

The forum, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Community Forum for Economic Development, the League of Women Voters, the North Central Indiana Central Labor Council, and the Michiana Voting Coalition.
